It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVDexternal drive, or USB flash drive.

Some types of malware will target Malwarebytes’  and other security tools to keep them from running properly. If that’s the case, try this first:

  • If Malwarebytes’ is Installed already

Go to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes Anti-Malware folder > Tools > click on Malwarebytes Chameleon and follow the onscreen instructions. The Chameleon folder can be accessed by opening the program folder for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (normally C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware or C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware).

NOTE: Once there, you may double-click on any of the files within that folder except mbam-killer.exe in order to attempt to launch Chameleon.

    3. If the Chameleon help file itself will not open, then double-click each file one by one until you find one that works, which will be indicated by a black DOS/command prompt window Note: Do not attempt to open mbam-killer as that is not a Chameleon executable and serves a different purpose)

Chameleon 2

    1. Follow the onscreen instructions to press a key to continue and Chameleon will proceed to download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for yo
    2. Once it has done this, it will attempt to update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, click OK when it says that the database was updated successful
    3. Next, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will automatically open and perform a Quick scan
    4. Upon completion of the scan, if anything has been detected, click on Show Result

Use Malwarebytes Chameleon to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on an already infected system

  • Renaming

If MBAM will not install, try renaming it first.

  • Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file file and rename explorer.exe or winlogon.exe.
  • Double-click on the renamed file to start the installation.
  • If that did not work, then try changing the file extension.
Vista/Windows 7 users, refer to these instructions.
  • Right-click on explorer.exe and change the .exe extension to .scr.com.pif, or .bat.
  • Then double-click on explorer.com (or whatever extension you renamed it) to begin installation.

NOTE:— In some cases it may be necessary to redownload mbam-setup.exe and randomly rename it before downloading and saving to the computer.

It is also possible the malware targeted your .exe files and alter associations. Without repairing the file association .exe files will lose functionality. If you are unable to run your programs you can also try this: Download FixExe.reg and save it to your desktop. Double-click on the file and select Yes when it asks if you want to merge the data into your Registry. Once that is completed you should be able to run other programs.
